“Logistics management is a supply chain management component that is used to meet customer demands through the planning, control and implementation of the effective movement and storage of related information, goods and services from origin to destination. Logistics management helps companies reduce expenses and enhance customer service.

The logistics management process begins with raw material accumulation to the final stage of delivering goods to the destination.

By adhering to customer needs and industry standards, logistics management facilitates process strategy, planning and implementation.

It all comes down to providing the item the customer wants when he/she wants it.

A business wants to move goods to the customer.  They want to do it efficiently.  They need to understand the customer demand and provide the best customer service to retain its customers.  They want the customers to be very satisfied with their purchase.

A customer would not only want the item, but would want it faster and at a high level of satisfaction with the experience.  The proper logistics management can provide that level of satisfaction.

An important element is the examination of history of the movement of goods.  Based on that, you look to see how could that movement be improved to provide a better experience for the customer.

By providing the best experience for the customer, the result the company sees is an increase in revenue. That is the true answer to what is logistics management.

logistics analyst

This is not really management, but it deserves to be listed. You work in the entry-level position of gathering and analyzing data regarding the company’s logistics. One should have good computer and math skills.


logistics engineer

You would not only analyze the supply change and logistics systems, but would work to provide and implement solutions to improve the process.

customer service

You would act as an intermediary between the customer and the logistics group.  Knowledge of the basics of logistics would prove valuable to be successful.


demand planning analyst

You would the inventory levels of the goods in stock. You may also be involved in purchasing goods as needed.  Analysis of billing versus inventory is a major part of this role.

Procurement manager

You find material suppliers, develop relationships and enter into contract for the goods. Some logistic companies, such as delivery services, do not have a need for this role.

distribution center supervisor

You are responsible for everything in the distribution center.  Maximizing revenue and making sure that the customers’ goods are sent out at the right time and in quality condition.


inventory manager

You are responsible for obtaining material goods and resources. Finding inventory problems and their solutions are key goals.  Management of computer systems and data are critical.


supply chain consultant

You would give advice on the way the inventory is managed.  This role is most often found helping small businesses that could provide a perspective of a third-party.


supply chain manager

You oversee the purchasing, warehousing, inventory and production.  Optimizing productivity and reducing costs are the main objectives.
