WHAT QUESTIONS TO ASK A CAREER MENTOR?

Some questions that may be on the mind of those scheduling a session with a mentor are:

1. What is a typical day like in a ___(fill in the blank)______ career?

• You may feel you already know what the answer will be, but you may be surprised to encounter some unexpected answers.

2.  What is a non-typical day like?

• This one will bring on surprises too! Determine if you see  yourself handling a non-typical day or decide on what steps you need to take to do so.

3.  What skills are needed to be successful on one of those non-typical days?

• Here comes your chance for improvement or enhancement of your current skills to match such success.

4.  Why did you choose to enter this career field?

• People that have succeed in during their career usually have strong characteristics or reasons for their motivation and success. Learning those could help you determine if yours are similar.

5.  What causes some people to fail in this role?

• The truth is that everyone makes mistakes. See if your mentor will tell about mistakes they made along the way and how they overcame them to continue their growth and advancement so you could do the same.

6.  What would you have done differently at this position?

• Investigate how you might avoid typical roadblocks or issues that arise in this field.

7.  Are there accomplishments for which you are most proud?

• Understanding those accomplishments may lead you to undertake similar objectives in the planning and development of your own career.

8.  What approach should I take to get to understand all of the skills and qualifications needed to be successful in this field?

• You may get an answer that you never thought of before that could be key in your decision to continue or in your ability to be successful in the transition.

9.  What do you wish you would have asked before you entered this field?

• The answer to this may give you insight to highlight exactly the same thing for you.  Even if it doesn’t, it was certainly key to your mentor and may come into play later in your development.

10.   How should I prepare for my initial job interview to show that I am competent with transferable skills for this different career field?

• Be sure to examine your skill set to determine which are transferable to the field of your interest. Be prepared to explain how they can benefit the new role.

Take a minute to consider all of your mentoring goals and objectives before talking with your mentor.

These are just some of the questions to ask career mentor during a mentoring session. There are may others as well.
