Navigation in the business world has gotten more complicated, rather than simpler. Even with the benefits of the digital age, it just presents more opportunities to gain the insight to find the best way to identify a potential mentor.

WHAT IS A GOOD BUSINESS MENTOR

The mentor you want is someone with experience in the field in which you are interested and who has the desire to help. A great mentor is one who has made and seen mistakes during their career. They can help you avoid them in your career path. Understanding the lessons needed and the willingness to pass them on are key.

WILL IT COST ME ANYTHING TO WORK WITH A MENTOR

The answer is yes or no!

In most cases, you will need to pay a potential business mentor for their time and insight. There is one source where you currently do not have to pay for their service. I will get into that a bit later.

Pricing does vary by the industry, level in the organization and specific career field. A prospective mentor can be found to work on a monthly arrangement and in some cases hourly. In this manner, you may be able to gain the information you desire on one hourly session. Or you could arrange for future hourly sessions if you feel it is a good fit.

HOW DO I START

Frankly, a great place to start is with yourself. Document a few items:

• What professional skills do you have.
• Where does your experience lie.
• Specify the reasons that you want to find the a good mentor.
• State all of the reasons that you want an experienced mentor to guide you.
• Identify the type of expertise and knowledge that your would like for the right mentor to have in this mentor-mentee relationship.
• Do you want them to be considered your role model or you just want information to apply your own way.
• Define the characteristics of the perfect mentor for you.
• Decide how long you want your mentor relationship to last.

GO ONLINE OR USE THE OLD METHOD OF PERSONAL DIRECT CONTACT

LET’S START OFF WITH THE OLD METHOD

It is who you know. Examine your list of contacts in your own network. Most of them know you to some degree. Your first mentor may be right there.

• If there is no one suitable or available to be a trusted advisor in that group, then talk with them about people they know. Check your family members and people you know who are small business owners. They may have known or utilized someone in a mentoring relationship.
• Move on to cold calling. You have to research to identify names of individuals that are in the area you want to explore. Email or actual phone calls may be a way to get your name in front of them. State that you are looking for advice in your desired area and you heard good things about them. You are curious if they have time for you learn more about what they are doing. Are they the right person.
• Investigate professional associations, conferences and other meetups in the business world that may lead you to contact with knowledgeable individuals. Check out small business development centers for a successful entrepreneur. The first time in a networking event of a new industry may feel strange, but you would be surprised as to the number of contacts you can make in your first meeting.
• Social media have grown to the point where you may be able to initiate a contact with the right person through various business groups.

You can find most anything on your phone even a business mentor. Search for mentorship programs and a list will appear. That is a great way to take the first step. You do have to research to identify which might be the role model you are looking for.

• The next step is to determine will be what kind of mentor you want. Are you searching for a successful entrepreneur because your are interested in starting small businesses? If so, then the first place to visit could be small business development centers. They are keen on helping individual develop their own businesses. Many new entrepreneurs started out that way and ended up small business owners. One place that usually provides access to mentor for free is SCORE.
  
• Online mentors are ready to help you since they signed up to provide their insight and guidance. There is no convincing them to do it. They are ready now!
• The mentoring relationship can be set up on a monthly or hourly basis typically. The hourly session particularly gives you information and answers quickly and usually more economically. Have your questions and your goal ready and your may be able to find out all that you need in one hour. You decide if more sessions are desired. Plus, if that mentor is not the right sounding board, then you can shift to another one easily.
• Investigate each social media platform to identify discussions or groups that may lead to a trusted advisor.
• The great and important aspect of an online search is that you are searching for experienced professionals that can be located anywhere in the world. You can communicate with them by phone or Zoom easily. The opportunities to locate a valuable asset of a mentor increase significantly.

CONCLUSION

It doesn’t matter what type of business or role in an organization that you are looking for. You have an outstanding chance of finding the right person for you.
