The major part of my article here describes the steps on how to become a good mentor at Career Redo. In addition, it is important to understand the arenas that will help you to be recognized as someone who develops a great mentoring relationship.

To do just that, you should concentrate on:

  1. Being a great listener and ensuring that you communicate clearly.
  2. Understanding where your mentees are coming from and empathize with them.
  3. Providing criticism that is constructive and that guides them to their defined goals.
  4. Encouraging the mentee to take responsibility for their advancement and success.

Some of those who are new to mentoring may ask “Am I qualified to be a mentor?” My answer is that if you have at least three years experience in your field, then you have seen many things occur at many different times under many different circumstances. You know why some people fail and also know why others succeed.

If you can transfer that insightful information to someone else, then you are qualified to be a mentor. In fact, you could become one of the role models for your mentee.

The second question that comes up is “Do I have to have a degree to mentor?” A great way to answer that question is “NO”. You do have to have sufficient experience in your field and the ability to communicate your experiences to someone who is willing to learn. You will be a sounding board for your mentee as they describe their goal and you provide your input.

Another question that appears is “How do I start mentoring?” That part is easy. Contact Career Redo and indicate your desire to begin the process. It really doesn’t take too long. I will ask for information on your background, experience and qualifications for the field in which you desire to mentor. You and I, together, will work to build your dedicated page on this website for all to see. I will let you know when a visitor has selected you as their mentor. That’s it!

The best mentors start this way!

The question that sometimes appears is “Can anyone be a mentor?” A truthful answer is No. A good knowledge of the career field and the communication skills to transfer information in a clear manner are needed to be an effective mentor. Most likely, you and your mentee will come from different backgrounds. You should find the best way to make this a good learning experience for your client. If you have a sufficient background and willing to be an empathetic communicator, then you can be a great mentor.

Now we get to the question that is in the forefront of many people. “How do I become a paid mentor?” That’s easy too!  Join us as a mentor at Career Redo and set your own price for your clients to pay you. This presents you with a great opportunity to receive one of the benefits of mentorship - extra income!

If your last question is “How do I find a mentoring job?”, the answer is right here at Career Redo. Start the short process to sign up by going to the green button below. You and I will develop your dedicated page. I will present you online and attract clients to select you as their mentor.

There are several elements that you should consider is participating in a mentoring partnership with a mentee.

  • A successful mentor is one who realizes the critical role they are playing in the professional development as well as the personal growth of their mentee.
  • The first time you begin a discussion with your mentee it is beneficial to ask about their career goals. Fully understanding their objectives can give you a fresh perspective on how to proceed in your conversations.
  • Your mentee will most likely come from a different background than you. The best thing to do is to recognize they are still in a similar situation of trying to understand what a career field is all about. What are the different ways that one can succeed and how does it fit into their skill set?
  • They may have come across difficult situations in the past and are looking for suggestions on how to ensue their career progression.
  • Position yourself as a positive role model to help them reach their full potential. Your goal is to become a trusted advisor.
  • When working with many young people, you may find an initial lack of direction for any career field. Based on the questions asked, you may share ideas that weave into the career field being discussed.
  • When appropriate, blend in your own mentoring experience to identify your own mistakes. They may find common interest is such situations and the way you overcame them.
  • Address their leadership skills and how they should utilize them during the application process.
  • Be that good listener! Incorporate your own experiences to emphasize how they can reach their personal goals.

If you have more questions, please contact me and I will be happy to talk with you on how to become a mentor.
