WHY DEVELOP MENTORING GOALS AND OBJECTIVES?
I believe we all recognize that a mentor can provide great insight to anyone who desires to change careers. Talking with someone who works in the area that you are interested in can be very helpful in understanding all of the elements involved.
But how do you get the most out of your discussion? Rather than “winging it”, it is better to go in prepared. One should think about the goals that you have in mind before talking with your mentor.
A great way to do this is to use the SMART goals process.
The SMART goals consist of those that are:
S - Specific: Identify precisely what actions you should take and what you want to achieve.
M- Measurable: What data elements need to be examined and what is your criteria.
A - Achievable: What resources do you need and are they available.
R - Relevant: Do the tasks you are addressing match the broad goals you desire.
T - Time-bound: Can
your target be achieved within the time-frame you set.
WHAT DO YOU GET OUT OF MENTORING?
There are so many areas that you could investigate in a mentoring session. You can
- Get a better understanding of how people succeed in that field.
- Discover why other fail.
- Identify the skill set required for success.
- Evaluate how your skill set fits in and what you should address to add to your current list.
- Understand the culture to evaluate if it matches your desires.
- See how your perception of the daily life matches or conflicts with what really happens.
- So many other reasons…
To help you add to your own list of questions to ask a mentor, you could consider adding these.
